This book will
take you on a tour of the lighthouses in what is
technically called Upstate New York, the region
north of New York City and Long Island.
Starting at the western edge of the state on
Lake Erie, we travel in a clockwise path across
that lake, then along Lake Ontario and the St.
Lawrence River before heading down Lake
Champlain and the Hudson River. We finish our
journey with a visit to six inland beacons.
You will be given detailed directions on how
to locate every beacon that is readily seen.
There is no need for a tour guide with this
book in your possession. Information will be
provided on each tower and a full-page
representative color photograph will be
displayed. Information will also be given
for those lighthouses that are not available for
public viewing. This is usually because they are
so far out at sea that getting to them is
prohibitive or, in some cases, because private
property prevents their viewing. In addition,
there are many cases where the original
structure is no longer in existence. A
discussion will be provided for those locations
where a modern light has replaced the original
structure and historical data will be given for
those beacons that simply no longer exist.
Whether you are a lighthouse aficionado
who loves chasing these classic structures or a
young family on a budget who is looking for a
low-cost tourist option, everyone should find
something of interest in these pages. Above
all, enjoy the lighthouses.
