About the Author David J. Schryver was born and raised in Watertown, New York, Jefferson County. After high school, he received an A.A.S. Degree in Math/Science from Jefferson Community College. He then attended SUNY Oswego where he obtained a BS in Secondary Education with New York State certification to teach mathematics, 7-12. His career took him to St. Lawrence County, one of the northern most counties in New York State, where he spent 33 years as a math teacher and 39 years as a resident. Along the way, he earned two degrees from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York ... an MEd and CAS, both in Educational Administration. He and his wife Marcia, a school reading specialist, were married in 1978. Now both retired, they split their time between their home on Pillar Point in Jefferson County, New York, and their winter home in Zephyrhills, Florida. They also spend as much time as they can with their three children and seven grandchildren and frequently find time to visit Northern New York's many beautiful waterfalls and, more recently, lighthouses throughout the eastern part of the United States. His interest in waterfalls and a side-line in web development led to the website, https://nnywaterfalls.com. First created in 2006, this has become a comprehensive guide to the falls in the northern part of the state. After Waterfalls of New York State, a book he co-authored was published in 2012, he decided that he wanted to follow-up on a long-time desire to write a book that focused on waterfalls in the North Country. This led to the three-volume series of Roadside Falls of Northern New York in 2017. Roadside Falls of Northern New York, Volume 1, The Tri-Counties came out first. This focused on locations closest to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River in the western part of Northern New York, the counties of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence. Roadside Falls of Northern New York, Volume 2, The Adirondacks soon followed. Focused on the extreme northeastern section of the region, this included Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Hamilton and Warren Counties. Within a couple of weeks of the release of Volume 2, Roadside Falls of Northern New York, Volume 3, The Mohawk Valley was released. This covered the seven counties across the center of the state and north of the Mohawk River Valley ... Oswego, Oneida, Herkimer, Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectaday, Saratoga and Washington Counties. Backyard Cascades of Northern New York, a pictoral account of several private waterfalls in the region was released in 2019 and Hiking the Adirondack Waterfalls was released in November 2021. The Schryvers have had an even longer-standing interest in lighthouses. Throughout their 46 years of marriage, they have visited towers in close to 22 US states, three Canadian provinces, Mexico and the Bahamas. David has recently turned his writing attentions toward this topic. Our Little Florida Lighthouse Book and Our Little Lower Atlantic Lighthouse Book were both released in December 2021. Our Little New York State Lighthouse Book, Our Little Mid Atlantic Lighthouse Book (covering New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania) and Our Little Maine Lighthouse Book all arrived in 2022. Our Little Western New England Lighthouse Book (covering Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont) was published in 2024. It is the author's hope to release a title covering the New York Metro area (New York City and Long Island) later this year. Plans are also in the works for lighthouse guidebooks of Massachusetts and the region bordering the western Great Lakes states. |
