This book will
take you on a tour of the lighthouses in the
state of Maine.
We actually start in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
with the Portsmouth Harbor Light. We have
included this because this location is less than
1/2 mile from the New Hampshire/Maine state
line. This point provides a good view of
the Whaleback Ledge Lighthouse, which is the
first Maine light on our list. From here,
we travel north along the rocky coast of Maine.
Many of these beacons are on the mainland.
For those that are located off-shore on coastal
islands, we will guide the reader to viewing
points that provide a reasonable vantage point.
Because Maine's coast is so rugged, many of
these classic stations are only viewable from
the water. Our discussions will include
three charter cruises that we went on to see
eighteen of these facilities.
You will be given detailed directions on how
to locate every beacon that we discuss.
Information will be
provided on each tower and a full-page
representative color photograph will be
displayed. Information will also be given
for those lighthouses that are not available for
public viewing. This is usually because they are
so far out at sea that getting to them is
prohibitive or, in some cases, because private
property prevents their viewing. In addition,
there are many cases where the original
structure is no longer in existence. A
discussion will be provided for those locations
where a modern light has replaced the original
structure and historical data will be given for
those beacons that simply no longer exist.
Whether you are a lighthouse aficionado
who loves chasing these classic structures or a
young family on a budget who is looking for a
low-cost tourist option, everyone should find
something of interest in these pages. Above
all, enjoy the lighthouses.
